Call 888-LITRBUG (888-548-7284), Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ anti-litter hotline, to report any potential littering violations including dumpsites and littering in public. LDWF’s Law Enforcement Division is the leading litter enforcement agency in the state.
Penalties for Littering and Dumping
Those convicted of litter violations face fines between $175 and $1,000 and up to 8 hours in a litter abatement work program.
• Simple littering such as trash flying out the back of a pickup truck carries up to $175 in fines and court costs.
• Intentional littering such as deliberately throwing trash out of a window onto a roadway brings up to a $250 fine.
• Gross littering such as depositing large amounts of trash into a ditch or having an illegal dumpsite carries $500 to $1,000 in fines.
Dumping violations can carry higher fines and additional penalties, depending on the severity of the dumpsite and the damage to the environment.
Call the Hazardous Materials Hotline at 225-925-6595 or 1-877-925-6595 to report hazardous chemical releases, air/water pollution, leaks and runoff as well as toxic environmental accidents and complaints.
Call the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) Single Point of Contact (SPOC) at 225-219-3640 or Toll Free 1-888-763-5424, to report chemical spills, releases or odors from things like paints, pesticides, oil, antifreeze, etc. as well as mass fish kills and burning tires.
Illegal dumping, burning or discharge of any kind in water is extremely harmful to our environment in many ways. Wrongful disposal of waste, shingles and tires should be reported, too. As soon as you notice, call the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s Criminal Investigation Division (LDEQ-CID) at 1-888-763-5424 or 225-219-3944.

Commonly accepted items to recycle include: cardboard, paper, clean food boxes, mail, newspaper, beverage cans, food cans, glass bottles, jars (glass and plastic), washing detergent bottles, jugs, and plastic bottles and caps.
However, not all items are accepted by certain recycling facilities. Please consult your local recycling facility to learn what is and is not acceptable recycling materials.

Reuse tupperware containers for leftover food storage. Reuse egg cartons or plastic fruit containers to act as a mini greenhouse to sprout plants. Milk jugs and plastic bottles can be transformed into bird feeders.
Items you should never put in your recycling bin include garden hoses, sewing needles, bowling balls, food or food-soiled paper, propane tanks or cylinders, aerosol cans that aren’t empty, automobile parts, paint buckets, wood, rocks, bricks, dirt, hazardous waste, syringes, broken glass, and broken lightbulbs. In the event of an environmental emergency, citizens are encouraged to first contact their local authorities - police, sheriff, and fire department.

What is 9-8-8?
- 9-8-8 is a new easy to remember 3 digital dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL).
- The phone number for NSPL has been 1-800-273-TALK. While this 10-digit number will continue working, the new 3-digit dialing code of 9-8-8 will be active in Louisiana beginning July 16, 2022.
- "By dialing 9-8-8 you will be routed to a local contact center and connected with a live specialist trained in emotional support, crisis intervention, and suicide prevention. These contact centers are approved by the national network of Lifeline centers and accredited to provide telephonic suicide prevention work.
- By dialing 9-8-8 you can also receive referrals to local behavioral health agencies/facilities.
- Your call is routed to your local center based upon the area code of the phone you are dialing from.
**In Louisiana area codes 504, 225, and 985 will be routed to VIA LINK.
** In Louisiana area codes 318 and 337 will be routed to LACG.
What is 2-1-1?
- 2-1-1 is an information and referral phone and text line.
- By dialing 2-1-1 or texting 898-211 you will be routed to a local 2-1-1 contact center based upon your zip code.
- Louisiana currently has three 2-1-1 contact centers and all parishes are covered by a 2-1-1 contact center.
- When you connect to a 2-1-1 contact center you will speak with a live specialist who is trained in providing information & referral for health and human services.
- You can request assistance with finding a resource referral for things such as: behavioral health clinics, doctor's offices, food assistance, rental/housing assistance, utility assistance, and other community resources.
- 2-1-1 is also activated by Louisiana government in disaster to provide up-to-date information on disaster activation and resources.
- For parishes there is an option to select prompt "3" for 2-1-1 Crisis but this is not a universal option. 2-1-1 is primarily an information & referral line
What is 9-1-1?
- 9-1-1 is an emergency phone line for when you are in physical danger.
- When you dial 9-1-1 you will be connected with a local dispatch center, based upon our current location.
- When you connect with a 9-1-1 dispatcher they will send out: an EMS, the fire department, or police officer to your location depending on your needs.
- 9-1-1 CANNOT provide behavioral health support or answer local information or referral questions.
- 9-1-1 should be dialed when you or someone else has a physical emergency and needs immediate attention/assistance.
- When you dial 9-1-1 an emergency service will be sent to you.
